The Wells-Barkerville Community Forest is managed under the terms of a 25 year replaceable Community Forest Agreement between the Province of British Columbia and Wells-Barkerville Community Forest Ltd, a company 100 per cent owned by the District of Wells.

The company’s Board of Directors are all volunteers and are assisted by a one day per week Coordinator. The administration costs are the lowest of all of the nearly 60 community forests in British Columbia.

Company Directors are appointed by the District of Wells and each has a one year term. Directors reappointed in October 2019 are Rod Graham, Ian Macdonald, Paul Galliazzo, and Ksenya Dorwart. Newly appointed Directors are Brendan Bailey and Tony Bensted.

The Directors meet approximately eight times each year. Their meetings are open to the public and dates, time and locations are posted on the “news and events” page of this website. Community input is encouraged at each meeting and, in addition, at least one Open House is held each year to encourage community participation.

Each year, as well, the Directors submit an annual report and annual financial statements to the shareholder, the District of Wells, for review at a meeting of the Wells Council.

All management decisions and activities must conform to the terms and conditions of the Community Forest Agreement, of the Management Plan developed as a requirement of the Agreement, and of a Forest Stewardship Plan approved by the provincial government.

In 2015 the Directors engaged the community in a process to identify objectives to achieve within the framework provided by the agreement, the Management Plan and the Forest Stewardship Plan. The subsequent work of the Directors has pursued those objectives.

Those objectives include: environmental goals such as sustainability and maintaining forest health, productivity, wildlife habitat and biodiversity; social goals such as forest recreation and forest education; and economic goals such as generating community revenue.
